New Default Landing Page

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Responding to feedback from our users, as of August 12, Knovel will change the default ‘entry point’ into Knovel to our Browse tab. We overwhelmingly heard from users a desire to review the resources in each of Knovel’s 19 subject areas in addition to using the Search Box.

For users who prefer our Basic search tab, don’t worry, it’s not going away.  And you can create a direct link to BASIC SEARCH, by bookmarking http://knovel.com/web/portal/basic_search.  Any existing links will be unaffected by this change.

Did You Know?

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Did you know that with Knovel you can test the corrosion rate of a material in contact with thousands of different media?

For example, use Fielded Search to find the corrosion rate of steel exposed to acetic acid.

In the first group, specify “acetic acid” as the keywords and “Exposure Medium” in the field box.

In the second group, specify ’steel’ as the keywords and “material or substance name” in the field box.

For additional precision, you can set the field “Corrosion Rate” to exists.
You can search by the exposure medium and the material to find corrosion data for the combination.

Or you can also use search to look for a material that is resistant to corrosion in a specific medium.
Information like this can be useful in determining inspection and replacement schedules as plant equipment begins to age.

Troubleshooting Mechanical Failures

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Vibrations in mechanical systems are often signals that there may be a problem within a component.  Check out this problem Knovel was able to help solve.

A mechanical engineer working on a transmission was hearing high vibration noises within the gearbox whenever the engine was running. Upon further inspection he found that the bearings were in need of replacement. He replaced the bearings, but after awhile the problem arose again.

Since the bearings were not lasting as long as they should, he concluded that there was another problem with the gearbox. He turned to Knovel and entered the search term ‘gearbox failure’. (Click on the search box to see the results.)

Gear Box Failure Search

In the title Root Cause Failure Analysis, the engineer found the answer in a table. The high vibration and short bearing life of the gears could be caused by a bent shaft, overload, or misalignment of gears. (Click to see the results in the image below.)

Table Results

Solution: The engineer found that the shaft was beginning to yield from overload, and he redesigned the shaft using a stronger alloy.

If you have a project that Knovel has helped you with or a problem you would like a Knovel expert to help you solve, let us know. If we feature your story, we’ll send you a $50 Amazon Gift Card.
